Letters and Sounds Training – Early Reading and Phonics workshops

Workshop 1

Everything you need to know about Letters and Sounds – one-day course.

Date and venue: Friday 6th March 8.30am – 4.30pm Alliance training room Brompton-on-Swale primary

Cost: £60 (delegates will still be charged for non-attendance or cancellation less than one week before the event).

This one day training session is designed for anyone wanting a thorough overview of Letters and Sounds, how it should be taught, integrated with early reading, assessed and what to do for the lowest 20%. Gareth Baterip, English Hub Literacy Specialist and Deputy Headteacher at Newby Primary will deliver the session. Gareth has many years of experience in EYFS and is also an SLE for Early Years.

Outline of the session
• Overview of each Letters and Sounds phase
• How to integrate phonics and early reading sing decodable books
• Assessment of phonics and early reading
• Targeting the lowest 20%
• Working with parents

Please Note: This will be an action packed programme with a prompt start at 8.45am. Please can we therefore ask delegates to arrive for registration at 8.30am to avoid clashing with the start of the school day.

Workshop 2


Letters and Sounds training – early reading - half day course

Date and venue: Friday 13th March 9.30am – 12.30pm Alliance training room Brompton-on-Swale

Cost: £40 (delegates will still be charged for non-attendance or cancellation less than one week before the event).

Half day training session designed for anyone wanting to consider how to link phonics and early reading in school. Charlotte Murray English Hub Literacy Specialist and English Subject Lead at Burley Woodhead will deliver the session. Charlotte is an experienced Y1 and Y2 teacher and delivers ITT phonics training for a number of different providers.


Outline of session
• How to ensure decodable books match a child’s phonetic knowledge
• Looking at how your school reading scheme is organised
• What happens once pupils are confident reading phonetically decodable books
• Sharing good practice with other Letters and Sounds teachers


Workshop 3


Leading phonics - one-day course

Date and venue: Friday 27th March 9.30am – 4.30pm Alliance training room Brompton-on-Swale

Cost: £60 (delegates will still be charged for non-attendance or cancellation less than one week before the event).

One day session designed for anyone who leads phonics in a school where Letters and Sounds is followed. Rachel Abbott - English Hub Literacy Specialist, Assistant Head and Phonics Lead at Saltaire Primary will deliver the session. Rachel is an experienced Early Years and Key Stage One teacher and has led phonics following the ‘Letters and Sounds’ approach for the last nine years.

• Opportunities to explore the role of the Phonics Lead in school
• Know what to look for when observing phonics
• Plan staff training in phonics
• Analyse how phonics can be assessed across school
• Look at different interventions which can be used to ensure pupils “keep up”
• Opportunities to share good practice with other Phonics Leads
